  1. A cow gives birth to her first calf at 2 years.

  2. The cow weighs around 1,200 pounds.

  3. The calf weighs about 90 pounds.

  4. Cows usually have 1 calf per year.

  5. Average cows produce between 5 and 12 gallons of milk a day.

  6. A newborn calf can see, stand and walk.

  7. Cows drink a bathtub of water (about 50 gallons) and eat 120 pounds of feed a day.

  8. Cows have 32 teeth.

  9. The body temperature of a cow is 101.5 degrees F.

  10. Cows have one stomach with 4 digestive compartments.

  11. Cows chew their cuds up to 8 hours a day.

  12. There are six breeds of dairy cows:

    Holstein,
    Ayrshire,
    Jersey,
    Brown Swiss,
    Milking Shorthorn

    About 80-90% of the milk people drink comes from Holsteins.

Did you know that cows love cereal, just like you?
In factories where they make cereal, sometimes there is a little bit more than they need. The extra cereal is put into large bins and every two weeks or so, it is sold to dairy farmers to feed to dairy cows. Cows love cereal! They also like potato chips and even cotton seed.
